Covering Costs & Raising Money
There are a number of ways to finance your dragon boat regatta whilst maximising the amount of money raised for your charity.
1. Find a sponsor or sponsors who are willing to donate a lump sum which can be used to cover the cost of staging the dragon boat regatta. In exchange include their logo on all your promotional material and offer them the chance to exhibit on the day. This method means that 100% of the entry fee charged to participants goes directly to the charity.
2. If you have a sponsor who wants to donate a smaller amount of money why not ask them to donate a trophy or relevant company merchandise which could be awarded to the Winning Team, Best Dressed Team or Best Team Name.
If you are unable to sponsor your whole event you can use the entry fee to help you cover the costs. Entry fees typically vary from £200 to £1,000 per team, with minimum sponsorship targets from £50 per person.
1. Charge a ‘per person’ or ‘per team’ fee that will go directly to covering the cost of the event. In addition you can then stipulate a minimum sponsorship amount.
2. Charge a ‘per person’ or ‘per team’ fee that not only covers the cost of the event but also the sponsorship money.

Points for Pounds
To ensure all participants at your event are as inspired to raise money as they are to perform well on the water a number of the charities we work with like to adopt an incentive system and award an overall 1st place prize which combines a team’s racing result with the amount of money they have raised.
The ‘Points for Pounds’ system encourages teams to raise as much money as possible as well as doing well in the racing. (It also helps to avoid a team entering the event, winning the racing and raising no money!)
Racing Points - Points are gained by each team for the position they have achieved at the end of the days racing:
1st Place = 150 points
2nd place = 145 points
3rd place = 140 points
4th place = 135 points etc. etc.
Sponsorship Points - Sponsorship totals for each team are collated by the Charity Rep. These totals are then given to Dragons Alive Race Control or Event Manager who will rank the totals highest to lowest and awards points to each:
1st Place = 150 points
2nd place = 145 points
3rd place = 140 points
4th place = 135 points etc. etc.
The points for racing and sponsorship are then added together to give an overall winning team.
There really is no reason not to use the ‘Points for Pounds’ system at your event. Everyone wants to be crowned ‘Overall Champion’ and this is the perfect way to achieve it. Some teams are so desperate to win the title they throw in extra cash on the day to boost their totals!
